With child abduction, sexual abuse, schoolyard bullying and sports injuries in today's headlines, parents have good reason to worry about their children's safety. It is virtually impossible, however, leading the busy, modern lives that parents and children do, to provide responsible supervision for a child 100% of the time. That's why it is vital that children be made aware of certain dangers and learn to look after themselves when trouble strikes.
Wing Chun kung fu is an excellent system of self defence for children. It is easy to learn and enormously practical. Designed by a woman, its movements are based on skill rather than size or strength, meaning a smaller person can develop the ability to overcome a larger attacker. All of the techniques are designed for realistic self defence situations rather than being acrobatic or fanciful. Some examples might be: repelling the blows or kicks of the school bully, breaking the grip of a would-be abductor, or protecting one's face or body in a rugby tackle.
Wing Chun is an excellent hobby for children aged from five years up because it combines a number of benefits. The primary benefit is that students learning Wing Chun greatly improve their confidence, the confidence itself forming a strong deterrent in dangerous situations. Other benefits such as improved self discipline and concentration can assist academic study, and mixing in classes with other like-minded children strengthens social skills.
The general fitness provided by Wing Chun as well as specific skills in co-ordination, reflexes, posture and flexibility, can greatly enhance children's physical development in their vital formative years (particularly adolescence). Wing Chun trains the mind as well as the body, helping students to develop alertness, concentration, control and confidence. It builds character, making it an ideal interest for shy or introverted children, helping them develop confidence and bringing them out of themselves.
